What the website needs next

Page history last edited by PBworks 16 years, 10 months ago

John & Erik have been working on the new web page. It needs work, but you can view a prototype: http://ksl.nettlau.org/documents/ is a good start.

Todos moved: WebsiteTodoErik

Hashing out the front page: WebsiteFrontPage

Mid June

'Persons' on site have dates (esp. for the dead, the famous, and the voluminous)

Mid-May

Costantini:

critiques and list of works is now up. 'home page' about Costantini is up (no pictures - need to be added)

Galleries not done yet.

Links also done. Probably some additions to be made, but i have checked all the ones there, removed dead or defunct ones.

John

comments on 'todo for launch':

I think the browse by are awesome! subject, people, place, orgs wow! seriously I'm impressed. What I'm more concerned with is making sure people know where they are when they first arrive at KSL site and that they now how easily accessible everything is once you get into the site.

Agreed -Erik

Also Erik did you notice that the bulletins are sorting funny? ie 1, 10, 11, 2, 20, 21 etc

Ok, added to todos (minor fix). -Erik

What do others think?

(Moved stuff to WebsiteFrontPage -erik)

I agree that front page and deeper 'content pages' may need slightly different layouts (ie change amount of navigation options at document level).

btw, all the bulletins are now up, both as bulletins and parts as documents. Both 'United states of America' and 'Spain' could maybe do with some regional subdivisions (states and 'regions').

> rearranged the sidebar so that one can display topics

I like the ability to browse organizations etc

I like the 'find it in a local library' link (that has a link to amazon, but we want people to get it from us I think)

Unfortunately mostly Worldcat just lists the BL. All items will have an "add to cart" when we have a paypal acct.

Publication dates:

Both "Emilio Canzi" and "Salvador Puig Antich" pamphlets are 'forthcoming', not out yet, despite the fact that they should be out by now.

(tho' I should be able to go in and mend this myself)

Yes, the distinction between forthcoming/published is purely a result of comparing the publication date with the current date.

Your todo list sounds like it covers everything.

> Hmm...Against all tyranny doesn't seem to have an online edition. Am I missing it?

No, but all its component parts are online. Maybe we should just bang up the intro?

> Perhaps we can hash out exactly what sort of lists we want to have?

> For example, (1) a huge list of all publications & online documents;

> (2) a list of online documents; (3) a list of documents available for

> purchase; (4) a list of documents which are available at the KSL for

> research; (5) documents whose existence we are aware of; etc.

That sounds OK. I assume 4 and 5 are in the 'one day' category?

(and connected)

Yes, someday. -Erik

> We can do that, or we can mix them up, so online documents are mixed in

> with publications available for purchase

While I want pamphlets in the list of documents so that people are more likely to see them, I think we need to distinguish them sometimes so we don't annoy people too much by them following a link and finding its only info about the pamphlet, not the text itself.

Good idea. I'm not sure the best way to do this. -Erik

Oh, and the internal links in the Yiddish biblio just go to the bibliography front page, not where they should.

(Periodicals Books & Pamphlets Library Home Page)

I think we need the following layout elements:

Kate's pic to be linked back to homepage

Also a 'homepage' link.

Homepage to have a bit of 'welcome' text (my suggestion is 'Welcome to the homepage of the Kate Sharpley Library: preserving and promoting anarchist history')

'more on the kate sharpley library' may need renaming. I just wanted to distinguish the section from the document 'about the ksl'

I think links to: donate / contact us / what's new may need to be in the navigation bar for every screen

Pamphlets and publications

I'm not sure 'pamphlets' as a section works: do people need to weed out online documents which have been in pamphlets? We should maybe drop it and use 'publications' (ie everything we distribute) in browse. (is that clear? When I click on 'pamphlets', what I really want is a full list of our publications which is what 'publications' will deliver.)

Though maybe 'publications' should be of the same level of importance as 'browse', rather than mixed in with subjects etc (ie raise it up the 'hierarchy')

> series

I'd like this to give the 2 series, anarchist library and anarchist sources, with either a listing below each of the titles it contains, or linked to an eg 'anarchist library' page with the list of titles.

Maybe 'series' needs to be a subsection of publications?

Pdfs

I don't feel sad if we lose pdfs like the obit of Ba Jin for a proper html document, but I think it would be good to get pdfs of as many bulletins as possible up (less photocopying)

> Todo in the future:

Could maybe also have

make organizations as authors possible

no doubt I'll think of others.

Hopefully I'll soon be able to put up the outstanding bulletins

And put up the documents we distribute but didn't publish (some of which are more important than others)

Which is pretty much the end of my to do's on content (unless you want me to move over the Costantini critiques?)

==

Core Texts these are now up

I think these are the core texts required before we go live:

About the KSL

Donations (why, and how to from uk, usa, with paypal etc) also donations of books / link to wants list

Recently received (rolling ie one page with the newest info at top)

Copyright / reuse info: credit and link. No commercial. No derivates. Contact us if you're a proper publisher. Comrades go ahead.

Contact the library: mailing address, email (spamproofed)(a web form for enquiries so we can guide them to say when they need it by?)

FAQ. Possibles: is there really a library? How does it work? Why 'Kate Sharpley'? how do I use it? Can I visit? What is anarchism? Will you publish me? Maybe you can think of more.

Website: redesigned/ upgraded 2007. webmaster email (spamproofed)

Library news (rolling? Maybe combined with 'recently received'?)

Books wanted. Need a current wants list (this could roll too)

e-newsletter. If we get organised or someone wants to volunteer to do it, we should mention that we have one on the website (something like a monthly if anything interesting has happened / been published / is coming list)

publishing - a bit of info on what we're looking for. And that there's no money

---

Layout

Ideas about the front page (only suggestions)

Header: Kate Sharpley Library: preserving and promoting anarchist history (unless anyone has a better strap line?) (item 1 on core texts)

Text on page 'Ksl...' then 'Welcome to the homepage (don't need word homepage -- jm) of the Kate Sharpley Library : preserving and promoting anarchist history'

Link to 'more about ksl'

Then links to:

All docs: by title/ author-title / subject

All ksl publications / distro

-- could the above be one link to database -- where there would be a short explanation of what is there, then all the links to different ways to browse.

-- for all ksl pubs. do we mean stuff we sell or to the databse again? I think we need to be clear and have a clear way to diferentiate for people otherwise they will be confused. so this second could perhaps be a link to a page that explains we publish and sell pamphlets individually and distro, and then explains with necessarry links how to go about viewing, lists, pubs, etc, and also how to order.

Link to FAQ, donate ('donate' should be on every page. Since we have no advertising people will have to put up with us begging!)

-- Also we need to set up and decide what our KSL sustainer price/program is going to be $100/$150 per year gets you all the pamphlets and journals plus that feel good feeling, or something like that. --jm I'm not sure if this should be here or where we explain about what we publish, or maybe even both places?

Sidebars (on right?) with:

Top - what's new on the website

Then, KSL news / random document from site / random pamphlet from list (I assume we can do that?)

I think the pic of kate could possibly be a bit smaller. What do you think? Either way, she should probably be linked to bring people back to homepage from all other pages.

Bottom on homepage might be a good place for regular but small navigation links like 'contact | copyright' etc.

other stuff:

What's new - do we need or want to lay out the changes to the site or just let people explore? Ie is saying 'look, we have subjects' too sad?

Do we need to generate DOIs for all of the docs?

Do we have the bandwidth to put barry's bookfair interview up - or should be just link it?
